One of he handiest things about the Internet, indeed, is its inherent ability to put people in touch with companies that sell the products they want and need. That doesn’t work quite so well in local markets where supply is strictly limited by demand – that means those low-demand items might be hard to find in a given market. When it comes to the Internet, demand expands nationally and (at times) internationally, meaning there is the potential for the supply of less common items to be substantially greater online than it is in any given local market.

What’s the point of all this? Let’s say you’re looking for a hotel supply company. Your choices of available supplies might be low in a local area, but that’s not the case if you’re shopping on the Internet. Let’s face it -- hospitality supplies & hotel catering supplies aren’t exactly in high demand in most local markets, so the choices of people in the market for those items are probably limited.

I'm not a very good cook, but I really am trying to learn! Now that I'm a little older I feel a little silly eating takeout all the time. So instead I'm going to try and learn how to cook for myself. Then maybe I can worry about trying to cook for other people. Right now for me a lot of it is about presentation because I'm a horrible cook at this point.

I thought I'd give myself some motivation by making a cute little apron for me to wear while I'm cooking and also to protect my clothes. It’s something I don’t admit often, but I – good ole The Hawg – used to be a lawyer. I learned at least one thing during the four fun-packed years I spent lawyering – attorneys are rarely the first in line when it comes to adopting new technology.

There are, of course, exceptions to that rule. While attorneys in these parts (and others) have been slow to utilize the Internet and market their services through social media, you’ll find some that have done that with gusto. One of the greatest inventions of the past couple of years has to be the ever useful laptop.

My daughter and her husband were friends with a couple in college that ended up being in their wedding. They are the sweetest people. They had to fly all the way from Oklahoma to participate in all the wedding activities. The boy had taken a job with a medical equipment company and took a transfer out there so he could double his income. His wife went back to school while living there and became a kindergarten teacher. They don’t have any children yet, but from looking at them on their Facebook page, I can tell they have two cute dogs. My daughter and her husband recently went out to Oklahoma to have a reunion of sorts with their friends. She told me that they stayed at their friends’ house and that it was so nice. Apparently they are doing really well financially which is very unusual in this economy. And, she told me that they are very frugal with their money. Gone are the days when they used to go out every night. Now they stay at home mostly, cook their dinner, and watch a lot of direct tv in oklahoma city.

Here's one thing I've learned from having children -- shopping for clothes for the little darlings can be a drag.

Any parent out there knows the drill. You’ve got to con the kiddies into getting in the car, then you’ve got to can them into going in a store, then you’ve got to chase them through the store (or stores) and reject one awful article of clothing after another. After all of that, the real fun begins – forcing them to accept the clothes you do find suitable and then paying your hard-earned cash on items the kids swear they hate.

In my quest to convert most of my media to a convenient digital format, I’ve had to use a video converter or two.

For my purposes, I want to convert my DVDs to videos in MP4 format that are stored on a huge hard drive and then streamed to my Xbox 360 and iPhone. Why? DVDs take up a lot of space, get scratched and are generally inconvenient. Dumping them on a hard drive is the way to go – I can simply shove the DVDs in a closet and then select the movies I want on, say, my Xbox 360. A 2 terabyte hard drive, after all, is much easier to manage than stacks of DVDs.

Converting all of that video requires a reliable DVD ripper. If you’ve got a decent computer, you’re in luck as there is a good video converter for Mac (you can call it a DVD ripper for Mac if you prefer that terminology) out there as well as a solid iPad video converter for Windows PCs, too.

My background is in journalism. To be precise, it’s on the editorial side of journalism.

What does that mean? I couldn’t sell advertising to save my life and I know it. When I worked in the newspaper business, advertising was sold by magical elves as far as I was concerned. When I started a site (not this one) that needed ad revenue, my approach was decidedly pitiful.

“Hey, uh. Like. You wanna buy an ad?”

“No.”

“OK.”

What’s the point of all this? Running an Internet site and raising revenue for it are two separate matters. One might be able to put up a great site that attracts a lot of traffic. There is a certain skill involved in doing that. However, that same person that is so brilliant in putting together a site with compelling content might not have the ability to attract advertisers. The ability to sell ads is also a skill and it’s a good idea to leave that task up to an advertising agency staffed with people who have that skill.

Three boards of Realtors in northwest Arkansas voted down a proposal on Wednesday that would have resulted in the largest local Realtors association in Arkansas.

Now, here’s the interesting thing – a person familiar with what went down on there said it appeared the proposal might pass until the full details of the merger weren’t released until right before the vote. Those details allegedly caused a lot of people to say “hell no” and vote against the merger.

Here we go again -- taking another look at how the Internet allows specialty stores to thrive. That's a topic one can never beat to death because specialization is one of those things that makes the Internet so great.

Yes, it's one thing to have a lot of common items available, but what does your local retailer have in stock when it comes to portable bleachers or aluminum bleachers? I was at a point where I was getting close to 200 spam emails a day and was starting to view my email account are largely a nuisance. If I had to dig through all that garbage to get the emails I wanted, what was the point of running an account at all?

Sure, I tried using new email addresses but the spammers always found me. I filtered spams out in Thunderbird on my laptop, but that did nothing for the mail I checked on my iPhone and Nook Tablet.

Gallup released its poll last week detailing what Americans fear as the greatest threat to them. While Barack Obama and the Occupy groups have attacked the wealthy and and conservatives have expressed concerns about the abuses of unions, the survey shows that Democrats, Republicans and others have increasing agreed that the biggest threat in the last two years during Obama's presidency is Big Government.

Summary stats:
- 64% of Americans say big government is the biggest threat to the country
- 26% say big business which is down from the 32% recorded during the recession
Since 2009 to 2011, all political groups have noted the growing threat of Big Government:
- Democrats From 32% to 48%
- Republicans from 80% to 82%
- Independents from 59% to 64%

Three boards of Realtors in the northwest corner of the state will vote next month on whether to merge.

Should the members approve, the new board will be the largest in the state.

Man, I hope these are just a bunch of false accusations floating around -- the founders of Angel Food, their son and an employee have been indicted for ripping off the charity.

If the four under indictment are found guilty, they deserve the worst the courts system can throw at them. Angel Food, which is based in Georgia, has helped around 500,000 families in the nation by providing them with heavily-subsidized meals. Churches here in Arkansas had embraced the program and volunteers spent countless hours working to improve the lot for people in their communities through the program.

It was a great program that ended earlier this year due to what those in charge of it called economic difficulties. A federal indictment suggests that's kind of true -- when people in charge of such a charity are stealing millions of dollars for it, perhaps the phrase "economic difficulties" does fit.

Earlier this year, Tokyo House opened in west Little Rock.

What is Tokyo House? Simply put, it's probably the best "Asian buffet" restaurant in central Arkansas. It may well be the best in the state.

Tokyo House -- a Japanese restaurant -- offers up sushi and hot meals for $18.95 a person. The food is fresh, the variety is incredible and the quality is far ahead of what you might expect in such a restaurant.

I'll put it this way -- that $18.95 is a bargain when you stop and consider how much quality and variety you get for the money. If you're in the area, pay the place a visit.

It has some farm humor and notes that "chickens tend to flock together, often following each other without a real sense of direction."

Bill Smith, Editor, ARRA News Service: In the "yesteryears" we used the term "the domino effect"to illustrate the spreading of communism. Cartoonist William Warren has now used dominoes in his latest political cartoon (below) to depict the coming collapse of the American economy.

Is there anyone "who cares" at the White House or in the Senate Democrat leadership and is also willing to stop or to help mitigate the coming economic collapse of America? Mr. Obama, we do not need anymore campaign rhetoric! The progressive liberals and even a few anarchist from odd political variations may be looking favorably toward the collapse of our country, but the rest of America is not.

Many House Republican have demonstrated their concern. They came to Washington with a clear understanding that they have no promise of returning for another term. They also understand that time is running out for certain problems to be resolved. They know they might be "out on the street" with their follow Americans if the economy collapses. Also, rumors are spreading of fear of a potential dictatorship operating out of the White House in the future if an economic collapse were to occur.

Yesterday, the ARRA News Service posted about 103 House Republicans supporting the the House Republican Study Committee's "Cut, Cap, and Balance” response to the debt limit and the bigger debt crisis that’s just over the horizon. It’s a simple, three-part plan:

• Cut spending to slash the deficit in half next year (requiring about $380 billion in spending cuts according to CBO)
• Cap spending so it aligns with average revenues (ratcheting quickly down to 18% of GDP from current 24%).
• Send a strong Balanced Budget Amendment to the states for ratification (with high hurdle for tax hikes and 18% of GDP spending cap).

I am excited to begin my career as a freelance journalist but there are a bunch of things I need to do before I really get myself off the ground. Without a site I can point potential clients to in order to show off my work, I may as well be going door to door! My friend Jennifer is going to help me design the site but I’ve got to make sure to do it very professionally so I’ll earn some credibility. It appears 2011 will be a banner year for the mortgage interest deduction -- it could either be scaled back, cut out or retained (thus ensuring it will burrow further into the tax code, of course).

The facts are, quite simply, these. The government is broke after bailing out every group under the sun over the past couple of years. Last year, the feds decided it might be good to cut back a bit on spending. It appears 2011 will be the day (or, rather, year) of reckoning.

In this climate, then, it's no surprise that the federal government is taking a hard look at the mortgage interest deduction as something to eliminate in an attempt to raise some revenue. It's also not a surprise that money-flinging interest groups such as the National Association of Realtors are throwing a fit about suggestions to touch the deduction at all. And the general public? Polls show they want to keep the deduction.
